The challenge: lifting people in east Africa out of subsistence farming, enabling farmers to raise cash crops as well as food. Any technologies must be affordable, easy to manufacture and maintain, and human-powered.

The solution: an irrigation pump that allows farmers to irrigate up to two acres of land (rather than the eighth-acre possible with a bucket), and allows local entrepreneurs to establish highly profitable small businesses, creating new jobs and new wealth.
